Let’s start off with introductions. I’m Rob, Owner, and Editor-in-Chief over at A Pawn’s Perspective, a tabletop gaming review site. I’ve been writing news and reviews in the game industry for just about 8 years now, but I’ve been a gamer all my life. Board games, card games, RPGs, miniatures…you name it. I grew up in the 80’s with games like DragonStrike, Fireball Island, and Battle Masters. Eventually, I moved onto AD&D 2nd Edition, Shadowrun, and the World of Darkness RPGs. Then came college. Then came 40k.
I spent more time and money building up a Space Marine army and painting it than I care to admit. I used to spend hours at the local hobby store using their tables to enjoy the slaughter or Orks and Eldar. After college, my interest in the game gradually died down, mostly due to the lack of play space. Fast forward to now and I’m a dad with 4 kids, way too many board games, and a healthy interest in miniatures again. I’ve got the space in my house to play, but table space is still a premium. That never stopped me from enjoying Dreadball, Guildball, and now Dust 1947. It just meant I could never really have the type of setup I remember enjoying at the gaming store I hung out in while in college. Then I found out about the ALPHA Game Table.
It took a bit of back and forth, but eventually, Firmer Terra sent me one to review. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical at first. Everything about the table looked awesome, but I was a bit concerned about how stable the table would be. It’s fairly lightweight for a 6’ x 4’ table and the multiple fold points and thin legs didn’t inspire much confidence.
I’ve had my ALPHA for almost 9 months now and I couldn’t be happier with it. It’s easy to set up, easy to tear down, and easy to store. It’s large and perfect for both miniatures and board games. It also served me well as a dining room table while my house was under a length of long, and stressful, renovations. The ALPHA became much more than just my family’s gaming table during that time. It became the center of our household. A place where our family could gather, do homework, eat our meals, and generally enjoy each other’s company while the entire first floor of our home was ripped apart and put back together. The best part? It could easily be folded up and stored so the contractors could work during the day and taken out and set up quickly when the kids got home from school.
Take a minute and think about that a moment. The ALPHA stood up to routine use by a family of 6 (my wife, myself, and our 4 kids) for an extended period of time and handled it like a champ. I couldn’t have asked for more from a $189 portable table. I’m a huge fan of the ALPHA. It’s proved to be an amazing product, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s more than just the size, the portability, or the ease of storage. It’s about the memories that were made at the table. The games, the meals, the quality time with family. In my mind, there’s no better judge of the table’s quality than the ability to house a large family for all of its needs over the course of several months. Oh yeah. They now come with a carry case to make them even easier to carry around. Sure, you can read my reviews, listen to my stories, and get a general idea of how cool the ALPHA really is. You’ll never really get to experience that, though, until you have one of your own. It’s an amazing table at an excellent price point. Whether you’re a hardcore Warhammer 40k player or casual tabletop gamer, the ALPHA is an excellent place to play.
